Reflection for the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Exodus 19:2-6a, Psalm 100, Romans 5:6-11, Matthew 9:36-10:8

If you hearken to my voice and keep my covenant,

you shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people…

The readings today acclaim the tender and limitless love of God. The Lord reassured Moses during His people’s arduous Exodus (in the first reading):  I bore you up on eagle wings and brought you here to myself.  How often we need to be lifted out of our fears or worries and carried to the Heart of God.  Our own prayers and the kindness of others do just that.

Next, Psalm 100 affirms the everlasting kindness of the Good Shepherd who faithfully tends His flock “to all generations”.  That love includes us and the little lambs God gives us.  By our care of others we shepherd them.  We see from your many intentions, friends, that you do that with your prayers, too.

In the second reading, Saint Paul expresses the highlight of God’s heartfelt messages to us when he writes to the Romans:  God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.  How He loves us!  Unto death!  We can repay the Sacred Heart of Jesus by imitating his outpouring of love.

While Christ was on earth He showed his tenderness over and over:  At the sight of the crowds, Jesus’ heart was moved with pity for them, the Gospel tells us. Then He instructed his disciples to do their part, to share His love:  “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”

The harvest is love and the work is love, too. This week we embraced love as we celebrated the Feasts of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  On Thursday, June 11th, in honor of Jesus’ love for each of us and in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, our bishops consecrated the entire United States of America to the care of the Sacred Heart!

This June we can follow the bishops’ lead and share our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus – It is love without limit! Mary’s Heart carries all our prayers to Jesus.  These two Hearts are our “eagles’ wings”!

Although we are beloved by the most tender of shepherds, and should adore Him for it, we, too, must ask the master of the harvest for more laborers.  There is so much work still to be done, and so much love to give!

You shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people.
