In Memory of Sister Marie Joseph, SCMC

March 23, 1933 - June 18, 2023

Sister Marie Joseph Gardes, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, Baltic, was called Home to God on Sunday afternoon, June 18, 2023.
Sister was born at Avignon, France on March 23, 1933, the daughter of the late Joseph and Marie Louise Perset Gardes. Sister was pleased to say that she worked as a shepherdess throughout her childhood. She entered Religious Life in Paris and worked as a nurse in France and England, though she spent most summers of her adult life at the site of the apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes in France caring for the sick and elderly pilgrims who came to the Shrine of Lourdes. Sister came to America and transferred to the Sisters of Charity in Baltic in 1993, professing perpetual vows on March 19, 2000.
During her life as a Sister of Charity, Sister continued caring for the sick and elderly at Regina Pacis Home in Pomfret, CT and at Holy Family Motherhouse until her retirement several years ago due to her own ill health.
Besides her parents, Sister was predeceased by her sister, Odette Cantagrel. She is survived by her religious community who will miss her greatly, and by her niece Maria Francoise Cantagrel, of Bezier, France.
The Sisters express their sincere gratitude to the medical staff of Backus Hospital for their loving care of Sister during her stay there, until her death at the Motherhouse.
