Reflection on the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12; Psalm 46; 1 Corinthians 3: 9c-11, 16-17; John 2:13-22

Do you not know that you are the temple of God,

and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

The Lateran Basilica is a beautiful church in Rome in which the Holy Mass is celebrated and Christ’s Body is reserved.   God has done a similar and wonderful work in each of us who remain faithful to Him. He not only made us in His image, but He also comes to each of us, to live in us as we go about our daily duties!  We are temples of the King of Kings, His dwelling places.

What would I do if an actual king came to visit me, like Saint Louis IX of France (13th century) or Blessed Charles of Austria (20th century)?  How honored I would be and what marks of attention I would give him.  How elevated would my conversations and actions be in his presence.  How much more should I prepare for Jesus to come to me!

One of the ways I can anticipate this visit is to reflect on how I should adorn my soul with virtues.  What type of holy “decor” shall I choose?  The Blessed Virgin Mary, so pleasing to God, will help me beautify my soul with her radiant virtues of humility and charity, and the other fruits of her Spouse, the Holy Spirit.

Our Lord of infinite power and love has said that His delight is to be with the children of men (Proverbs 8:31).  I need to be mindful that the Lord’s dwelling place is in all hearts, in those of my friends and of people whom I may meet only in heaven.

Last week we joined all the Saints and all the Holy Souls in prayer, members of the glorious Church Triumphant and the holy Church Suffering, respectively.  Today let us pray for all of us in the Church Militant, currently on our earthly pilgrimage.

Each of us is working on constructing a temple as a suitable dwelling place for the Lord.  As we build our spiritual houses on the rock foundation of Jesus, we can trust our Master Builder to complete the work we have begun.

…for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.
