Reflection for the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, 2024

2024 Daniel 12:1-3, Psalm 16, Hebrews 10:11-14, 18, Mark 13:24-32

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

My body, too, abides in confidence.

Some darker clouds of Scripture move into our liturgies towards the end of the Church year. That is a “sign of the times” for us pilgrims. As a People of God we live with mystery while we wait for the revelation of heaven. We live in a world confused by relativism, yet deep in our hearts we know that Truth is absolute. Truth is a Person on whom I want to stake my life. Jesus is my certitude, my Rock.

Some standards like honesty are inherent in our human nature and are a common heritage of all of us children of Adam and Eve. They are objectively true, but at times it takes courage to stand up for them.

For example, our first parents were tricked by a lie that denied the generous goodness of God. There is a deceitful spirit abroad still, which denies Truth. Sometimes I have to unmask it and struggle against it. The mention of “Michael, the great prince” in the first reading reminds me about the St. Michael Prayer, which is so helpful in the spiritual battles that we face, in a world that disguises reality. When things look muddy, prayer and listening for God’s answer can clear the troubled waters.

Prayer is our weapon; trust in God is our safeguard. We can trust in Truth, which the Church proclaims in season and out of season, whether popular or not. The second reading affirms the more than reassuring truth that God, through Jesus Christ, has saved all those who wish to be saved. “For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being consecrated.”

Times will change, skies will darken, but the Son of Truth will always rise for those who place all their hope in Him. The unknown future should hold no fear for us who cling, weak as we are, to our God who never fails. Let us ask Our Lady, the woman of the Apocalypse, to keep us loyal to Our Lord until the end.

Let us also continue to remember and pray for all of our dear departed loved ones this month. That is an act of charity all of us can do.

Have a blessed week.
